AMAZED

A lot of things amaze me and unfortunately this list will probably be mainly negative.

Bullying in schools these days; not just the subtle nasty bullying but bullying so aggressive that it makes the national news.

Domestic violence   – I can ‘understand’ it happening in places where there is no education, but in mainstream society where we are made so aware of this as well as the support networks available to the victims, why are there still so many perpetrators and victims?

The treatment of the Bengalis by the British East India Company in the famine of 1770 – I obviously heard about this in a recent documentary. At the time, Britain was supposedly  a Christian country.

The barbaric treatment of people by Muslim militants.

In Western society where people have ‘everything’, why so many turn to drugs, particularly hard drugs.

In an educated society, why educated people have fundamentalist style thinking on issues, meaning they can only see their point of view and will not accept that there may be another way or a better way of dealing with an issue. I thought education was supposed to open minds – it sure did open my mind and I didn’t even attend university.

Here is an interesting one. A correctional centre worker recently told me that people with a Christian background don’t do the major crimes.

This one really upsets me. I recently received a brochure from Scripture Union regarding Chaplaincy work, and there was only one reference to God in the whole brochure and this from an evangelical Christian organisation.

Along the same lines, I have twice spoken with the Salvation Army couple (lovely people, who are responsible for the Salvos store where I volunteer) about Christian matters and ministry and there was no interest shown whatsoever.

On a more positive note, I am so pleased that society and authorities are now listening to the voices of victims of paedophilia – but how could adults, particularly Christians, turn a blind eye in the past to these horrendous crimes? – that part amazes me.

What doesn’t surprise me is the vocal opinion in today’s society of a negative attitude towards Christianity – God was very thoughtful when he warned us of this in the Bible. In his articles on school curriculum, Kevin Donnelly has pointed out the desire of some to exclude the (positive) influence of Christianity on Western history and politics, as they try to rewrite history deleting this aspect of our culture.

Unfortunately as our society seeks to leave God out of the equation, I don’t see any improvement in our society and what I find even more concerning is the decreasing lack of relevance of once predominant Christian organisations. I am always so pleasantly surprised and encouraged by the articles in ‘Eternity’ magazine as I read about positive programs and outcomes, but the relevance of Christianity to people’s everyday lives just isn’t marketed in the secular world, or I don’t see it and I do read and listen to the media each day.

However what I continue to find amazing is that from the beginning of time “God was preparing his plan of reconciliation, as he still loved the people he had created”, ‘Bible Stories For Big Kids’ page 1.

God has not abandoned that plan of reconciliation – Praise the Lord!

I have always loved telling Bible stories, especially those from the Old Testament. For the past 25 years I have been teaching Religious Education in the local State School.  Each time I revisit these stories, I still find there's something more for me to learn. That's what I find so refreshing about the bible.
