I have often wondered about the priorities of hospitality in Jesus' time when I would consider a drink of water more welcoming than having one's feet washed. Now that I have had 14 days wearing sandals in the hot Kimberley bush of Western Australia, I can attest to the desire of all on our 4WD coach to rush to the bathroom to clean our feet as soon as we arrived at our safari tents at the end of a day. I had never realised the association of the importance of clean feet to one's well being.
So much for clean feet!
The beauty, grandeur and sometimes breathtaking scenery of the Kimberleys yet again reminded me of the greatness of God and his kindness in giving us yet another part of his creation to enjoy. As the sun 'set on fire' the western wall of the Bungle Bungle range for just two minutes one afternoon, another passenger and I spontaneously sang the chorus of 'How Great Thou Art' - a rather inadequate gesture of appreciation to our God.
So, clean feet or a drink of water?
I don't know about Jesus' day but both are very welcome in the Kimberleys.
